On our way home from a marriage retreat in Lake George, NY, we stopped by the small rural town of Sharon, VT. This is where the prophet, Joseph Smith was born to Joseph and Lucy Mack Smith in December of 1805. At the 100th anniversary of his birth, this monument was erected in his honor. The only things left of the original house were the front step, which is covered with snow at the moment and the hearth stone that is currently in use as a hearth stone in the little museum.
The girls enjoyed the break from the long car ride and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery and clear blue skies.

The top of the monument is 38 1/2 feet tall to represent every year of the prophet's life and is the largest single piece of polished granite in the world.

Great blog, Meg. In the new scriptures there is a map of significant early events in Church history. From your house in NH, you are close to a dozen of those sites, including this one in Sharon. Good for you guys to visit. The big girls will never forget it.

That place is on my list of "someday" visits. I love the bit of trivia about the granite statue. I watched a documentary about them putting up the monument. Pretty cool. Thanks!
